These pendants and cups are part of ongoing series that re-creates the safety and solidarity in a black lives matter sign and makes it functional.
Those signs mean something to me. They make me feel welcome and safe in a real, tangible way, and I wanted to make something in response. The pendants and tumblers are designed to start a conversation, if anyone ever asks you about the lines, you know what to say.
On the design:
I must call attention to the genius work on the BLM color, wordmark, and stripe logo done by Oakland’s Design Action Collective, the firm behind it.
That “PAY ATTENTION, DAMMIT!” yellow was an absolutely brilliant design decision. The color and the all-caps, hard-aligned text makes a powerful statement that works as well on a hand-lettered sign as it does on a four-lane street in DC.
I’m particularly drawn to the three stripes that have evolved since the original logo was designed, at first as abstractions of the wordmark, then minimized and rotated and remixed in all kinds of ways.
