general order is a 10-year project celebrating juneteenth.
It's named for the Union Army’s General Order no.3 - the order that communicated the “news” of the Emancipation Proclamation to the people of Galveston Texas on June 19th, 1865 and freed the last of us. Each year, I offer a limited number of functional sculptures, holding one in archive. The full series will eventually consist of 265 pieces across the country and possibly the globe. The work exists fully wherever there is a single piece. The distributed nature of it is a way of celebrating and recognizing the diaspora and the scattering of culture - just because something is far away doesn't mean it's not part of the whole. A 2022 celebration cup in Alaska? general order. A 2023 sharing bowl in Virginia? general order. 2024's call and response platters in South Carolina and California? general order. The complete set of 10? general order. I'm truly honored to have my work in your collection. I honestly love these things (and not just because I make them). I find them endlessly useful - as I type this, there is one on our counter (salt, olive oil, three nectarines). I find them a perfect vehicle for generosity, farmer's market bounty, a wealth of party snacks, oysters on a bed of salt. |
