This 10-year project consists of an annual release of functional sculptures created in response to the Union Army’s General Order no.3 - the order that communicated the “news” of the Emancipation Proclamation to the people of Galveston Texas on June 19th, 1865 and freed the last of us.
The full series will be (eventually) 265 functional sculptures, but the work exists fully wherever there is one piece. It's a way of celebrating and recognizing the diaspora and the scattering of culture - just because it's far away doesn't mean it's not part of the whole. The 2022 celebration cup in Alaska? That is general order. The 2023 sharing bowl in Virginia? That is general order. The 2024 call and response platters, in South Carolina and California? That is general order. The complete set of 10? General order. |
