watch with me: pottery on screen

For the past few months I’ve been away from my studio, and one of my joys has been watching ceramics videos online. Of course I miss museums and in-person exhibits, but I’ve seen a few great videos and thought I’d share. 

Once a month over the next 10 months, I’ll share 3-5 videos I’ve really enjoyed, with timestamp comments. Minimal reading - I promise these posts will be under 1000 words. The videos really do speak for themselves.

I’d not come across Peter Hayes’ work previously, so this 11 minute film was my introduction.

Watch this right now.

The finished work shows a rare sense of texture and form, and oh-my-goodness I want to see this work in person! 

Three moments I really liked: 
6:50 - this technique of rolling out the texture to flatten it and make it a bit more subtle - really interesting thing that I want to try. 

8:51 - you’re going to need to pause here. This piece is incredible. Why they thought we only needed to look at it for 3 seconds from one angle is beyond me. I love the balance and movement and the weight of the base.

9:04 COPPER + IRON WASH IN THE RIVER. That iron brown patina is going to blow your mind.

This packs a lot into three and a half minutes.

0:11 seconds in and I’m already learning something I want to try. Super curious about that soft clay shaping/trimming technique
using a blunt tool. 

0:57 wow, what a color.

1:24 gosh those seams and curves. This has such an air of internal, unselfconscious self satisfaction. I would love to see this. I would love to be this in the world.

1:50 - is surprise after surprise. I was enchanted by those gauges at 2:00, then my mouth actually fell open 2 seconds later.

Another new-to-me artist and a beautifully shot 11 minute film with excellent music. 

0:17 - I know this is my covid-vision, but can we get the man a mask? And - what an intro. I’m  SO CURIOUS - is this a wedging technique?
Is that a rammed earth floor?

3:18 - how in the world is he going to pick up and move this piece?

4:15 I really hope that texture gets preserved - that’s so striking and compelling.

4:52 - that twisting coil method is really interesting, must try. 

5:13 WOW, looks like board formed concrete. #love

Final thought -  aside from wondering where the 4 other people are that helped him get this into the kiln- what stunning forms and textures. I’d really really like  to see these exhibited in person - are they meant to be shown individually, or as a group? Eye level? Ground level? Inside or outside? And where’s the follow up with the 360-degree views?
